Hoping to increase the number of Korean visitors to Hawaii, State Representative Sharon Har and State Senator Donovan Dela Cruz have proposed creating an official Koreatown in Honolulu. The area will cover several blocks stretching from Kalakaua Avenue to about Keeamoku Street and will run along Makaloa Street. There are already several strip malls in that region which cater towards Korean constomers. According to the 2010 Census, there are approximately 24,200 Koreans living in the state of Hawaii. In 2011, almost 100,000 visitors from Korea came to the Hawaiian Islands.
By having a formal designation, residents and shop owners of that area hope to generate additional community support as well as attract more Korean visitors to the state. Non-Korean visitors may also wish to visit and see the cultural diversity that Koreatown Hawaii would have to offer.
