CMBY 2011 Investment LLC has petitioned the state Land Use Commission to rezone 86-acres of agricultural land to urban use in order for them to build a heavy industrial park on Maui. The petition stated, "The availability of heavy industrial land in Central Maui is so limited that rising land values and industrial rents are making it unfeasible for heavy industrial users to build or expand their operations." CMBY added that they intend to subdivide the site into 28 lots ranging from a half-acre to 20 acres, and will sell these lots to industrial businesses. Possible interested parties include companies that specialize in concrete and cement production, quarry operations, petroleum storage, lumberyards, chemical manufacturing, slaughterhouses and automobile wrecking facilities.
The Maui County's Planning Department and the state Office of Planning have given their support for an industrial park subdivision plan. The Land Use Commission will have a public hearing on September 5th at 9:30 a.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Kahului. Even with approval from the Land Use Commission, CMBY estimates that it could take another two or three years to obtain all the necessary approvals before construction of the subdivision would begin.
