The National Guard Association of the United States has announced that they will be holding their annual conference at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu this year. The conference, to be held from September 20th to the 23rd, is expected to attract approximately 3,000 to 3,500 attendees. However, several officials at the Pentagon are questioning the choice, and feel that it would not look good to the public if the National Guard holds the event at a vacation destination. President of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Mike McCartney is delighted that the event will be held in the islands and commented that the state's strong military presence makes Honolulu the ideal location for these types of events. The Hawaii Tourism Authority has been making a big push to show that the state can be a place for serious meetings, and point to the success of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in 2011. McCartney added, "Hawaii is more than just a leisure destination, we are a place that can host productive and quality business meetings."
