Members of U.S. Military Work to Help Homeless Veterans

According to a survey conducted in January 2013, there were a total of 398 homeless veterans on Oahu. This number represented a 8.4 percent increase from 2012 and a 34.5 percent increase in 2010, and accounted for nearly 9 percent of the 4,556 homeless people on the island. To help combat the problem, active-duty military personnel from the United States Armed Services have teamed up with the Institute for Human Services, U.S. Vets, the West Oahu Vet Center and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs in an outreach program that helps identify homeless veterans and provide them free health care, food, toiletries, mental screenings, information on veteran benefits, enrollment services and assistance with financial claims. The goal is to dramatically reduce the number of homeless veterans on Oahu within a few years of starting this initiative.
