Illegal to Smoke at Bus Stops, City-Run Parks and Beaches As of January 1, 2014

The Honolulu City Council has voted unanimously to make it illegal to smoke cigarettes and other tobacco products and bus stops, city-run parks and beaches as of January 1, 2014.  Provided that the bill clears a routine legal review, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell has announced that he will sign Bill 25 and Bill 28 into law. Supporters of the bill, including Stuart Coleman of the Surfrider Foundation, are delighted about this development.  The Surfrider Foundation organizes monthly beach cleanings with their volunteers.  Coleman commented, "Scores of children go to the hospital each year for ingesting (discarded cigarette).  Pets also swallow these things.  It's going to be a great thing for the public and beach-goers to not have to breathe the secondhand smoke."

However, Michael Zehner of the Hawaii Smokers Alliance noted that he was "appalled" by the smoking ban at beaches and parks.  Zehner also questions how the city will be able to enforce the anti-smoking laws.
