Navy Decides to Not Installing Solar Panels on Ford Island Runway

The United States Navy had initially thought to install a large array of photovoltaic panels on the Ford Island Runway in Pearl Harbor. However, after receiving a lot of opposition from various historic preservation groups, the Navy has released a statement that they will not be rushing into thing and will also be looking for alternative sites for their project. Executive Director for the Historic Hawaii Foundation, Kiersten Faulker was delighted with the news and stated, “I think they (the Navy) are being responsive to the input they’ve been given. We believe the Navy needs to look more closely at alternates rather than putting it on the Ford Island runway.”
The Navy stated that they will also be considering locations at West Loch, Waipio Peninsula, and on the Joint Base of Pearl Harbor and Hickam. The Navy Region Hawaii issued a statement say, “The Navy is studying cost-effective and environmentally sound locations. We are committed to balancing our responsibility toward energy security, environmental stewardship, and the preservation of historically significant facilities and structures.”
