According to the Honolulu Marathon Association, the 2012 marathon is expected to be one of the biggest races in it’s 40 year history and may even set new records. Jim Barahal, president of the HMA, stated that the number of participants should exceed 30,000 people and direct and indirect revenue from the race should be between $125 to $130 million. This is a significant increase the 22,615 runners in last year’s marathon which generated $100 million.
Marathon media director, Pat Bigold, commented, ”It’s going to be one of the biggest fields we’ve ever had. It will be only the seventh time we’ve gone over 30,000, which is difficult to do. That puts us in the category of a mega-marathon. (The Honolulu Marathon) is by far the biggest economic generator of any sporting event in Hawaii. Three times bigger than the Pro Bowl, which generates between $30 million and $35 million.”
