Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill Must Continue to Accept Garbage

The Hawaii Supreme Court made a 5-0 ruling that the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill must continue to accept garbage after July 31, 2012.  Mayor Peter Carlisle was pleased with the ruling and stated, “No community wants a landfill in its backyard, but it’s important to understand that our island will continue to need one for the foreseeable future to handle materials that can’t be recycled, can’t be turned into energy by the HPOWER plant or that result from a natural disaster.”
Leeward Oahu residents were frusterated by the news and feel that the landfill should have been closed years ago.  It should be noted that the state Land Use Commission had informed the City and County of Honolulu to find another site back in 2000.  As of today, several sites are being evaluated, but the City and County of Honolulu has stated that it will take another seven years to find and develop a new landfill to take over for the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill.
