According to a report released by City and County of Honolulu, the unemployment rate for Honolulu declined during the month of December 2011 to 5.3 percent, as opposed to the 5.7 percent posted in November 2011. This decrease allowed Honolulu to be tired for the 36th lowest unemployment rate for a major metropolitan area out of 372 cities surveyed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The statewide unemployment rate was 6.6 percent. Hawaii County (Big Island) posted the highest unemployment rate in December at 9.2 percent. Kauai County had a 8.3 percent unemployment rate and Maui County had a 7.3 percent unemployment rate.
