Allegiant Air Reduces Number of Routes to Honolulu

Allegiant Air has announced that they will be reducing their total number of routes to Honolulu down to two: one from Los Angeles and one from Las Vegas.  Allegiant once offered 10 different routes to the islands including service from Boise, Spokane, Eugene, Fresno, Bellingham, scottsdale, and Stockton.  Allegiant spokeswoman Lindsay Hernquist stated, "We weren't seeing the demand we were hoping to see, and we have a responsibility to our shareholders with our resources to use them effectively."  The airline will continue to offer seasonal flights from some of the above mentioned cities, but feels that the year-round demand is not there.

Allegiant Air to Restore Seasonal Service to Six Mainland Cities

Allegiant Air has announced that they will be restoring seasonal service to six mainland cities from Honolulu in June for the summer season.  According to their representatives, flights will be made available from Honolulu International Airport and Phoenix, Fresno, Stockton, Eugene, Boise and Spokane.  Spokeswoman for Allegiant, Jessica Wheeler, stated, "Hawaii is turning out to be a little bit more seasonal than originally anticipated.  We don't always announce schedule changes. We tweak our schedule all the time."

Allegiant still offers service all year long from Hawaii to Bellingham, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Allegiant Air Struggles in Hawaii Market

The low-cost airline, Allegiant Air, has not been doing as well as they had hoped for since expanding their service to Hawaii about a year ago.  President of the Las Vegas-based airline, Andrew Levy, noted that they do not have enough demand from the smaller markets that make up their company's business model.  Levy stated, "There's just not enough bodies there to support year-round service at prices that make sense.  So we're seeking another market or two that we can operate on a year-round basis because there's enough traffic density in the market, and that's what we think L.A. will do for us."

The airline has announced that it will offer nonstop service twice a week from Los Angles to Honolulu starting October 30, 2013.  However, they have also suspend routes from Boise, Idaho; Spokane, Washington; Eugene, Oregon; Pheonix, Arizona; and Fresno, Stockton and Santa Maria, California due to low numbers.  Some of these routes will be reinstated for the holiday season.

Allegiant Air to Offer Nonstop Service Between Los Angeles and Honolulu

Allegiant Air has announced that they will be offering a new nonstop service between Los Angeles, California and Honolulu, Hawaii.  Allegiant Travel Co. President, Andrew Levy, stated, "For just over a year we have been offering travelers convenient, low-cost service to Hawaii, as well as great deals on hotel, car and show reservations.  We will soon offer Oahu residents great deals on vacations to Los Angeles."  Allegiant is offering twice-a-week service with an introductory price of $99 one-way.  Currently, Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines offer the same direct route between Los Angeles and Honolulu.

President and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Mike McCartney, believes that the new service offered by Allegiant will provide an additional $26 million in visitor spending for the Hawaiian Islands and an additional $3 million in tax revenue.

Allegiant Travel Company Sees Earning Increase

Allegiant Travel Company had a net income of $16.9 million during the third quarter of 2012, which equated to a 78 percent increase from the $9.5 million earned during the same period a year before.  Andrew Levy, the President of the company, believes that their success is a direct result of Allegiant Airlines beginning service to Honolulu in June of 2012.  Levy state, “Three-quarters of our flights, namely the Vegas market, is a market that has a lot of competitive capacity in there.  And the fact that we had a very short booking window, 60 days approximately before our first flight, makes us feel really, really good about Hawaii. Normally we want to have that booking window open for six to nine months for Hawaii because typically bookings are made a little bit further in advance. So, all things considered, we think Hawaii is off to a terrific start.”
Allegiant Airlines will begin offering additional flights in November to Hawaii from Bellingham, Washington, Fresno, Santa Maria, and Stockton, California and Eugene, Oregon.  The company also plans to start additional service from Phoenix, Arizona, Boise, Idaho and Spokane, Washington to Hawaii in February 2013.  Levy added, “It’s a little too soon to be able to really have a whole lot of clarity on the three routes we’re starting up in February.  We don’t want to hazard a guess there, but so far with what we have, we do feel really good about it. So we feel Hawaii is going to be extremely additive and it has been so far. We think that’ll continue as we go forward. At the same time, we’re going to learn about demand trends there and we’re going to be able to adjust both capacity and pricing decisions in the future as we get smarter with experience.

Hawaii Tourism – Allegiant Air’s First Flight to Hawaii

Allegiant Air celebrated its first flight to Hawaii on Friday with a non-stop service from Las Vegas to the Oahu.  Spokeswomane for Allegiant, Jessica Wheeler, stated, “In many of our markets, we’ll be starting direct flights to Honolulu later this year that never have had direct service to Honolulu.  So this will give them a new direct option that’s very affordable, and we expect it will be extremely successful. In Fresno, we’ve already seen so much popularity on our route that we’ve added an additional route on our schedule before the flight has even started.”
According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, it is estimated that in 2013, Allegiant Air will have 150,748 seats to Hawaii and will generate $136.3 million in direct visitor spending.  This will give the state $14.9 million in tax revenue.  Vice President of Brand Management for the Hawaii Tourism Authority, David Uchiyama, stated, “Las Vegas isn’t really the emphasis when you look at the secondary cities they’re coming out of like Stockton, Eugene and Spokane.  These are real opportunities for Hawaii where people are going to have greater access. It’s going to create first-time visitors here because of the access. So that’s really the focal point for Allegiant.”
Chief of Staff for Governor Neil Abercrombie, Bruce Coppa, commented, “To see that there’s more and more interest in coming to Hawaii is good for our economy.  We are a destination that people want to come to. There’s a lot of competition but Hawaii is unique. What we’re seeing with Allegiant, and with the recent direct flights from Hawaiian and United to the East Coast, is that it’s bringing more and more of America into Hawaii. So it’s a good day. It’s a good thing.”

Allegiant Air Cleared to Fly to Hawaii

Allegiant Air has announced that it has obtained certification from the Federal Aviation Administration to offer extended-range operations (ETOPS) and have flag carrier status.  Both certifications were necessary for Allegiant Air to provide service from the continental United States to Hawaii.  According to their press release, nonstop service from Las Vegas and six West Coast cities to Honolulu will begin in later this year.  President of Allegiant Travel Co., Andrew Levy, stated, “This is an important day for Allegiant.  Obtaining ETOPS and Flag Carrier status not only clears the path for our new service to Hawaii, but also opens up potential international opportunities, and will play an important role in our company’s future growth. Our operations team worked long and hard to ensure the completion of this certification.  The new Hawaii service has proven very popular, and we are pleased with initial bookings.”
Allegiant Travel Co. is the parent company of Allegiant Air and also generates income by selling hotel rooms, car rentals and attractions to its passengers.

Allegiant Air to Add Even More Flights to Hawaiian Islands

Allegiant Air, announced in April 2012 that they would be begining flight service to Honolulu from Las Vegas, Nevada and Fresno, California.  The airline has just announced that they will be expanding service to include Bellingham, Washington, Eugene, Oregon, Santa Maria, California, and Stockton, California starting in November.  To introduce these new routes, Allegiant is offering one-way fares ranging from $159 to $199 this week only, with the stipulation that travel must occur by January 15, 2013.
President of Allegiant Air, Andrew Levy, stated, “All these markets have been on our list for more than 2 1⁄2 years, and the reason they have been is because these are markets we have served in every case for years and have had a lot of success in serving.  So when we looked at potential markets into Hawaii, these are the ones that rose to the top of the list because of the success that we’ve had, the history that we’ve had and obviously because of the fact that they are easily reachable with the range of the 757 aircraft.”
According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), these additional flights and routes would provide an estimated $86.6 million in annual visitor spending for Hawaii and approximately $9.4 million in tax revenue.  President and CEO of the HTA, Mike McCartney, added, “The regional cities that these new flights will service provide greater opportunity for travelers in the U.S. West, our largest market, to visit the Hawaiian Islands.  Allegiant’s two new flights servicing Kahului will also help to distribute the benefits of tourism across the state. We look forward to working with them in building their presence in Hawaii.”
