Hawaii Economy – Honolulu International Airport to Get $739 Million Renovation

The Honolulu International Airport will get a $739 million renovation and expansion of its facilities. Included in the four year long project would be the addition of two new concourses, a building that will house all of the airport’s rental car companies, larger taxiways that would be able to accommodate larger planes and several other security and safety related upgrades. President and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Mike McCartney, stated, “It’s the first impression our visitors have of Hawaii and it’s the last impression. We are a world-class destination. We deserve a world-class airport.” Governor Neil Abercrombie added, “The Honolulu International Airport should reflect that Hawaii is the anchor of the Asia-Pacific region. The expansion represents a historic investment to help ensure a welcoming and positive experience for visitors and residents alike.”
According to the Federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the Honolulu International Airport served more than 7.6 million passengers in 2012.
