Honolulu Rail Project – Mayor Candidates Debate Rail Project

Former Governor Ben Cayetano has promised that if he is elected this November as Mayor of Honolulu that he would do everything in his power to end the Honolulu Rail Project.  Kirk Caldwell, on the other hand, supports rail and feels that it is best option to reduce traffic.  During their first debate, things became rather heated about the topic of rail.
Cayetano argued that Caldwell was misleading the public about how much traffic would be reduced thanks to rail.  Cayetano stated, ”Both the city and the federal government agreed that rail would not relieve traffic congestion and, in fact, congestion would be worse in the future with rail than it is today without rail.  And yet you kept quiet and went along with the hype. And when you became mayor, you didn’t tell the public the truth.”. The Honolulu Rail Project is estimated to cost $5.26 billion.
Caldwell argued that Cayetano does not have a better plan to deal with the city’s traffic problems and thought that Cayetano’s Flexible Affordable Smart Transportation Plan was “half baked”.  Caldwell asked Cayetano for specifics on his FAST plan and argued that it would cost more then the $1.5 billion that Cayetano estimates.
