Lava Flow Stalls, But Threat Remains

The lava flow on the Big Island of Hawaii from the Kilauea Volcano has stalled, but scientists are quick to state that the threat is far from over.  Dr. Janet Babb, spokeswoman for the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaii Volcano Observatory, stated, "What is happening now is just a pahoehoe flow being a pahoehoe flow. They will advance and then sometimes slow down or stall. The flow is still active and lava is still being supplied, because we're seeing breakouts above and behind the flow front. That tells us that lava is still being supplied."  A pahoehoe flow is one of two primary types of lava flows on Hawaii and is generally associated with slow moving lava that has a smooth or ropey looking surface.

The lava flow has so far traveled 10.2 miles from its source at Puu Oo crater and is about 1.4 miles from the outskirts of Pahoa town.

Earthquakes at Mauna Loa Have Experts Speculating Eruption Possible

Over the past month, Mauna Loa volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii has had a series of small earthquakes, leaving experts predicting an eruption is possible.  Volcanologists with the University of Hawaii noted that it could still be many more months before anything happens, but the quakes are usually associated with magma moving deep within the earth's crust.  Kevin Dayton, Hawaii County spokesman, stated that the county is working with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to keep track of Mauna Loa.  Dayton stated, "There's no eruption at this time, and we certainly hope there won't be,"

According to the Hawaii Volcano Observatory, Mauna Loa has erupted 33 times since 1843, or about once every five years.

Lava Flow Continues to Slowly Get Closer to Kaohe Homesteads on Big Island of Hawaii

The lava flow on the Big Island has slowed significantly over the last few days, but it is still moving steadily towards the Kaohe Homestead subdivision on the Big Island of Hawaii. According to Hawaii County officials, it is now less than 200 yards away, though due to the nature of the flow it is unclear if and when the lava will reach the subdivision. Residents have not been ordered to evacuate at this time and the danger is not considered to be imminent.

Government officials are also concerned about what to do if the lava flow overruns Highway 130 which is the main access point for the area.  Different contingency plans are being drawn up, but Hawaiian groups are also reminding the state that it would be culturally wrong to attempt to divert of change the flow of lava.

Lava Threatens Big Island Residents in the Kaohe Homestead Subdivision

Lava from the Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii is now just 0.8 miles away from the Kaohe Homestead subdivision, and experts warn that it could reach houses within the next five to seven days.  The Hawaii County Civil Defense Administration estimates that there are more than 30 families who live on the rural and agricultural lots in Kaohe Homestead, and have been working to help them to prepare for evacuation.  This lava flow is the first to threaten homes since 2011, and is moving at a slow, but steady pace of 820 feet per day.  This potentially means that it could reach Highway 130, approximately 4.2 miles away, in about a month's time.

Most of the residents in the Kaohe Homestead subdivision are taking the news in stride. They refer to the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele, and state that she is doing what she does. Piilani Kaawala, of neighboring town Pahoa, stated, "You cannot change the direction. It's Mother Nature. What we need to do is work together and help each other out. That's the only way we're going to survive the lava flow is if we work together and share aloha." Ihilani P. Niles of Puna added, "Pele is our kupuna. She is our ancestor. Like my tutu said, knock it off already. Sorry to you guys, but we're not diverting her. If she feels like she needs to clean her house, let her clean her house."

Big Island of Hawaii Neighborhood Concerned About Lava

The Hawaii County (Big Island of Hawaii) Civil Defense has raised their lava threat level for Puna residents from a lava watch to a lava warning.  A lava warning is the highest alert level, meaning that a hazard eruption is imminent, underway or suspected.  Less than one mile away from the Kaohe Homestead subdivision a lava flow is threatening to not only destroy homes but also to potentially cut off the only access point for residents of the neighborhood.  Civil defense officials are encouraging residents to review their evacuation and emergency plans, though did state that as of Wednesday afternoon, the flow posed no imminent threat to the area.

The evacuation of area livestock has already started.  It is estimated that there are tens of thousands of animals that might need to move.  Sidney Singer of the Good Shepherd Foundation in Puna stated that all owners of livestock and pets should begin making plans now to find refuge for them.  The Civil defense will hold another meeting at 6:30 PM on Thursday at Pahoa High School to update residents.  Interested parties may also go to hvo.wr.usgs.gov or to hawaiicounty.gov/active-alerts for additional and updated information.

Hawaii County Now Prohibits the Sale of Tobacco Products to Anyone Under 21

Effective immediately, Hawaii County (Big Island of Hawaii) now prohibits the sale of tobacco products to anyone under 21, making them only the fourth municipality in the country to take this step.  The Hawaii County law will also prohibit the purchase of electronic cigarettes and all liquids for electronic cigarettes, regardless of whether they contain nicotine or not, to anyone under 21.  Anyone who turned 18 before July 1, 2014 is grandfathered in and are still allowed to buy tobacco products.  Jessica Yamauchi, the director of the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii was delighted by the news.  Yamauchi stated, "It is starting to catch on. Hawaii island is first (in the state). It was introduced at the state Legislature this past legislative session. It passed through one committee on each side and just didn't get another hearing. If you can prevent them from starting before the age of 21, there's very little chance they'll become regular, addicted smokers."

Under the new law anyone caught selling or distributing tobacco products of electronic smoking devices to an underage customer (under 21 years old) will be subject to a maximum $2,000 fine.

Big Island of Hawaii to Ban Single-Use Plastic Bags on January 17, 2014

Hawaii County (Big Island of Hawaii) has announced that their ban on single-use plastic bags will begin on January 17, 2014.  The Hawaii County Department of Environmental Management, which is overseeing the transition, is not expecting any major challenges, and have noted that many customers have already begun using their reusable bags at stores. Director of the HCDEM, Bobby Jean Leithead Todd, stated, "People adjust, and we don't anticipate any major problems.  We've had tremendous cooperation with the public and the stores."  Plastic bags will still be allowed for certain bulk items like fish, nuts, meats, grains, fresh produce, garments and prescription medications.

Maui County and Kauai County are already not allowing the use of these types of plastic bags. Honolulu County's ban will go into effect on July 1, 2015.  Director of the Hawaii chapter of the Sierra Club, Robert Harris, commented, "From a marine perspective it's a tremendous victory. On Maui, in particular, the plastic bag ban has been incredibly successful. I think people in Hawaii care greatly about the environment."
