Office of Hawaiian Affairs Wants Right to Build High-Rise Apartments in Kakaako

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is requesting the right to be able to build high-rise apartment buildings on their land located next to the ocean in Kakaako.  Currently, there is a height restriction on residential development near this particular waterfront.  If the state government grants OHA this right, it will significantly increase the value their land.  However, several local community group are opposed to the Office of Hawaiian Affair’s request and state that they do not want Kakaako to become another Waikiki.
