Film and Television Industry Spent $223 Million in Hawaii in 2014

According to Donne Dawson, the Hawaii Film Commissioner, the film and television industry spent a total of $223 million in productions in 2014.  This is a slight decrease from the $228 million that was spent in 2013 or the $245.6 million that was spent in 2012.  Dawson commented, "I don't think there's a way to explain (the drop), really.  We did have a project that was slated for 2014 that pushed to 2015. If it hadn't, the figure would have been significantly higher. These things happen for a variety of reasons. It's the nature of the industry."  Dawson added that she does not anticipate much growth in spending in 2015.

Hawaii Economy – Hawaii Five-0 Show Renewed for Another Season

CBS has announced that they have renewed the Hawaii Five-0 television show for a fourth season. According to Walea Constantinau, the Honolulu Film Office Commissioner, this announcement will generate about $55 million in revenue to the state’s economy and add about 250 jobs. This does not include the obvious advertising benefits and free publicity that would help Hawaii’s tourism industry. Constantinau added, “It stands to reason that 44 minutes every week of strong visuals of Hawaii is just an immeasurable impact. We are all about the visual impact to drive and support our No. 1 industry (tourism).”

Last Resort T.V. Show Canceled

The ABC Network has announced that they will be canceling their Last Resort television show after just one season. The television drama, which was filed in Hawaii, had remained very popular with critics, but did not create a strong viewership following. After its initial premier episode which had 9 million viewers, numbers fell steadily with it’s most recent episode only bringing in 5.68 million viewers. According to film economists, a network like ABC would spend between $2 to $2.5 million per episode, with approximately two-thirds of that money staying in the local economy.

Last Resort Television Show Holding Its Own In Ratings

ABC’s television drama “Last Resort” reported a viewership of approximately 6.5 million people this past week.  While those numbers aren’t fantastic, ABC also noted that there was also an increase in the recording of the episode on DVR and estimate that another 3 million viewers record the show to watch later.  Last Resort is filmed in Hawaii and has currently shot nine out of it’s thirteen schedule episodes.  However, the ABC network just ordered the writing of two additional scripts, so it is possible that additional episodes will be produced.

Last Resort T.V. Show Draws Strong Rating

According to ABC, the new television show “Last Resort” was seen by over 9 million viewers in its series premier last week. The basic premise of the show is that a U.S. nuclear submarine comes under attack by their own government and they decide to take over a small island in the Indian Ocean and declare themselves the world’s newest nuclear power. The majority of the show is shot in Hawaii and would be the third major series that ABC has filmed in the islands.

New Korean T.V. Hotel Channel Launched

The Korea Travel Network, or KTN, will be a brand new hotel-only television station to serve the Korean tourism market in Hawaii. The station be shown in approximately 100 hotels throughout the state in approximately 33,000 hotel rooms. KTN will provide Korean national news, Korean dramas and programming, and tourism information. Currently, there are four daily flights from South Korea to the Hawaiian Islands.

“Last Resort” TV Show to Begin Filming in Hawaii

A new action/drama television series called the “Last Resort” is scheduled to begin filming in Hawaii this summer.  The show will be produced by ABC and is scheduled to film at least 12 episodes.    This is good news for Hawaii’s economy since networks will typically spend $2.5 million per episode filmed.  Commissioner of the Honolulu Film Office, Walea Constantinau commented, ”When a network comes to town, it’s like a $30 million to $50 million business opening up here.  The fact that people continue to look at us and continue to find us a valuable place to do these shows is a great statement about our value as a production center and the ability to do productions here.”
