The Hokule'a Hawaiian voyaging canoe and its escort vessel, the Hikianalia, are getting ready to depart Oahu for a journey that will last three years and take them around the world. Upon returning from their voyage, which is called Malama Honua or Care for Our Earth, the two ships will have traveled over 50,000 miles and visited 26 different countries. The Polynesian Voyaging Society hopes that the journey will promote the better care of Earth's finite resources. They also hope that their trip will inspire those who live in Hawaii to use the islands as a virtual laboratory to pursue solutions to growing environmental problems and threats.
