The International Waikiki Hula Conference will be holding events throughout this weekend in Waikiki and the Hawaii Convention Center. The event, sponsored by the Waikiki Improvement Association draws addendees and spectators from throughout the state of Hawaii, the mainland United States, Japan, Taiwan, China and Canada. According to event officials, participants can learn about modern and ancient hula, chants, history, costume, lei making, Hawaiian language, songs, and music. There will be over 40 of Hawaii’s top kumu hula (master hula teachers) who will be participating in the conference, and together they will put on 10 shows throughout Waikiki. Kumu hula Kapiolani Ha’o stated, “I love to see the tears of happiness on the faces of these dancers when they are done and you see that they have learned hula and they understand it.
