Honolulu Mayor Pushes to Repave Roads

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell had promised to repave over 300 lane miles of roads on the island of Oahu in 2013. According to the city's Department of Design and Construction, as of June 30, 2013 a total 139 lane miles have been repaved and an additional 25 repaving projects are either in progress or about to start.  The projects will cost a total of about $200 million in total, but Caldwell notes that this is still one of his top priorities.  Caldwell stated, "We're close to 150 (miles). It takes a while to ramp everything up, I mean, it's really ramping up.  We have some major contracts that are ready to be put out to bid that are large, significant amounts of lane miles. Everyone has assured me we'll be on target."  Caldwell hopes to repave 1,500 lane miles of the city's 3,500 lane miles over the next five years.
