Waikiki Beach to Finally Get New Sand

State officials have announced that they are finally ready to start their $2.3 million project to resupply Waikiki Beach with new sand.  The sand will be pumped in from offshore areas off of Waikiki and will increase Waikiki Beach by an average of 37 feet in width.  The project will begin on January 23, 2012 and will take approximately 3 months to complete.  The state Department of Land and Natural Resources, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and Kyo-Ya Hotels & Resorts all contributed funds to the beach widening project.
